Papers of Charles Rogers Fenwick, 1934-1969.

This collection consists mostly of Fenwick's work for the Democratic Party in Virginia. It includes correspondence, financial papers, reference material and literature from the campaigns of Fenwick and other local and state politicians especially for the 1966 campaign of Harry Byrd and A. Willis Robertson, the 1964 and 1968 national elections, the 1965 gubernatorial fight, 1963 and 1967 State Senate campaigns, and his 1945 lt. governor campaign, and the contested results and court case in Wise County. As a member of the Democratic State Central Committee and chairman of the 10th congressional district Democratic Executive Committee he corresponded with leading Virginia Democrats, handled patronage and the Democratic clearance file for job seekers, and hosted annual political barbecues at his farm James View. There is little material from his legislative career with the exception of papers on constitutional amendment, 1967-1968, the 1968 bond issue for higher education and mental health, abstracts of bills introduced and proposed during his career, and speeches on patriotic, Virginia government, and Arlington civic topics, and his chief legislative concerns of education, health care and roads. Constituent correspondence is limited almost exclusively to school integration in 1959, and reaction to the Perrow Commission report. There is considerable correspondence from his term as University of Virginia rector but most of it concerns admission of potential students and football players in whom Fenwick was interested, miscellaneaous minutes and documents, papers on several campus controversies and on the establishment of George Mason College, its development and expansion, and trouble with director Robert Reid. The collection also includes biographical material and a caricature by S. Robles, clippings, photographs, press releases, and scrapbooks. There are letters of thanks from Franklin D. Roosevelt, Hubert H. Humphrey, and John F. Kennedy and other correspondence from Harry F. Byrd, Sr., Harry F. Byrd, Jr., Watkins M. Abbitt, Flora Crater, Mills Godwin, Albertis S. Harrison, Henry Howell, Sidney Kellam, George C. Peery, James H. Price, Fred Pollard, A. Willis Robertson, G. Fred Switzer and William M. Tuck with those of Abbitt, Byrd, Jr., and Robertson of more importance.
